KU-based physician spending more time caring for St. Rose patients

By SRHC - Community Wellness,HaysMed / St. Rose

MbogoriA Great Bend Internists (GBI) physician has been devoting one week a month to his patients for several years but recently doubled his commitment to St. Rose Health Center. GBI is part of the St. Rose family.

Jimmy Mbogori, M.D., is now seeing patients two weeks a month on the newly remodeled second floor at St. Rose. His home base is the University of Kansas Medical Center where he serves as a hospitalist.

“When you are a hospitalist you care only for inpatients in the facility, in cooperation with their primary-care and other physicians,” Dr. Mbogori said. “When I am here I can develop individual relationships with outpatients who come to GBI.

“I enjoy being able to contribute to St. Rose in particular and rural Kansas in general,” he added. “It is just more personable in smaller towns.”

When he is not in Great Bend, patients can rely on other GBI providers, including James McReynolds, M.D., and Jeanne Habash and Ed Habash, both physician assistants.

“I have complete confidence in my colleagues,” Dr. Mbogori said. “Patients can count on GBI and St. Rose to handle their health-care concerns.”

Dr. Mbogori came to St. Rose after Dr. Richard Preston retired in 2011 and said he continues to be impressed with its local services.

“Even though the Kansas City area offers many options for primary care, I have been quite impressed with what we can do at St. Rose,” the internist commented. “We have such a good variety of providers and services.

“To be honest,” he continued, “my early impressions of rural Kansas did not prepare me for the quality and quantity of treatments we can provide at St. Rose. We serve at levels similar to those at larger facilities. Certainly, personnel-wise, you can’t beat the people here. They are professional and dedicated to their patients.”

Dr. Mbogori also has high praise for St. Rose’s efforts to emphasize wellness and prevention of disease.

“This is so important,” he said. “Medical services are not just for a crisis of some kind. We don’t have to wait for an illness to develop because of all the easily accessible immunizations and screenings for diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

“Rather than playing catch-up, we can prevent problems from getting serious,” he added. “In too many cases, patients come in when they are not functioning. For example, someone doesn’t take smoking cessation seriously and then COPD is diagnosed.”

Dr. Mbogori completed his medical degree at the University of Nairobi in Kenya, and his internal-medicine residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

He is accepting new patients.

Prescription assistance program moves to Kirby Building; applicants welcome

By SRHC - Community Wellness,HaysMed / St. Rose

The office for the local program that helps with the cost of prescription drugs has moved but its services are still available for those who qualify.

Prescription Assistance of Central Kansas has moved from St. Rose Health Center to the Kirby Medical Office Building, 3520 Lakin, Suite 103.

Eligibility for the prescription program is based on income, said Joleen Tustin, volunteer coordinator. Office hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and 2 to 4 p.m. Thursdays; the phone number is 620-792-6541.

Tustin or her volunteer colleague, Betty Schneider, is available to prospective applicants during those hours.

“This program is for anyone who does not have insurance to cover any part of their prescription medications,” Tustin said. “If their insurance company pays for some of the costs, they are not eligible.”

Tustin outlined the basics of the program.

“Say your doctor writes a prescription,” she began. “You go to the pharmacy but the cost is too high for your budget, which is not unusual. You can come to us and we will try to help.”

Tustin emphasized that the program doesn’t have money for any medications; pharmaceutical companies, which set their own guidelines, sponsor this program.

Medicare patients are encouraged to enroll in Plan D, which helps with drug costs. However, some companies help Medicare patients and some don’t.

“We will guide all applicants through the whole process and fill out all their paperwork,” Tustin said. “They just need to spend a little time with us when they bring in documentation about their income.”

Proof-of-income documentation for every wage earner in the household is a must. Depending on individual circumstances, applicants should bring one or more of these documents:

* First two pages of your most recent 1040 IRS tax form

* Copy of your Social Security or disability verification letter

* Unemployment or worker’s compensation benefits letter

* Three consecutive pay stubs

“Once we have the information we need, we will submit it to the proper companies to determine what kind of help is available,” Tustin said. “While it takes a little bit of time, in many cases it is worth it.”

Since the process to determine if someone qualifies may take four to six weeks, Tustin said patients with chronic conditions must find a way to pay for the first visit to the pharmacy.

“The particulars in any specific case depend on the medication and the manufacturing company’s guidelines,” she said. “Many companies have a program like this or have access to grants.”

Currently, the local program helps 20 to 30 people a month.

Tustin said she appreciates St. Rose Health Center, which donates office space, equipment and supplies to the 11-year-old program. “St. Rose has always been supportive and we are grateful to everyone involved,” she commented.

Mark Mingenback, corporate health consultant, said this is yet another way for St. Rose to fulfill its mission of helping people with their general health and well-being.

“We are only too happy to be in this partnership with the prescription assistance program,” Mingenback said. “St. Rose will do all it can to create a healthier community.”

Hays Medical Center Lifeline service now equipped with GPS

By SRHC - Community Wellness,Golden Belt Home Health & Hospice,HaysMed / St. Rose

20150428_110254In the past, HaysMed Lifeline subscribers had to be at home or close to it to benefit from the service.

But today’s subscribers can be anywhere in the United States and assured that help will arrive when needed, said Cathy Russell, HaysMed Lifeline coordinator.

The service is now equipped with the Global Positioning System, more commonly known as GPS. It is available in many counties in central and western Kansas.

“Lifeline is able to track you at or near your home, as well as throughout the country,” Russell said. “Whether you are in a rural community and your closest neighbor is 15 miles away, or you travel to another destination, Lifeline is at your fingertips.”

Depending on the subscriber’s needs, Lifeline entails wearing a button around the neck or on the wrist. A press of the button alerts Lifeline, which then contacts a neighbor, family member or emergency services in a specific location – whichever the situation calls for.

“There is no age limit to our service,” Russell noted. “We have had subscribers in their 20s and up to age 105. Any of us could find ourselves in a situation where we need help.”

Russell cited an example of a local man who stayed in a Colorado hotel, and slipped and fell in the bathtub.

“He had no way to call for help,” Russell said. “He had to wait for the maid to come. With our new GPS, this frightening situation wouldn’t happen.”

Prior to the GPS equipment, if someone was going to be away from home for any length of time, it was cumbersome to transfer the service to the new location. That is no longer necessary.

“We encourage families to consider this service, especially if there are aging parents involved,” Russell commented. “If parents shy away from the idea, their doctor may be able to convince them to subscribe.

“People of all ages are more mobile than ever before,” she continued. “They are not just sitting at home, which is why the GPS is so important.”

The Lifeline coordinator also noted that cell phones are not always the answer in an emergency situation.

“People tell me they don’t need Lifeline because they have a cell phone,” Russell said. “But they also tell me the phone is usually in the trunk of their car or not turned on.”

HaysMed Lifeline offers two types of service. One involves the basic button that a subscriber pushes; the other includes “auto alert.”

“Depending on the circumstances, the auto alert will automatically send for help,” Russell said. “If someone falls, it gives an individual about 30 seconds to recover. If they trip and get right back up, it would not activate.

“However,” she continued, “if you take a tumble, and don’t get up or become unconscious, help will be on the way automatically.”

Russell noted that whenever possible, the button should be pushed as an added precaution.

A private individual started Lifeline in Hays in 1983. HaysMed acquired the service two years later. It contracts for equipment and service through Philips Lifeline, a well-respected company, Russell said.

HaysMed Lifeline is available in these counties: Barton, Cheyenne, Decatur, Ellis, Ellsworth, Gove, Graham, Lane, Logan, Ness, Norton, Osborne, Pawnee, Phillips, Rawlins, Rooks, Rush, Russell, Sheridan, Sherman, Smith, Stafford, Thomas, Trego and Wallace.

St. Rose, HaysMed team now providing one-day procedures in new surgery suite

By SRHC - Community Wellness,HaysMed / St. Rose

Healthcare Workers Week surgery team 004St. Rose Health Center is now home to a new, technologically advanced surgical suite on the second floor of the facility, said Cathy Boyd, R.N.

It recently began offering one-day surgical procedures including colonoscopies, upper endoscopies, carpel tunnel surgery, pain management and minor biopsies.

The facility recently earned the stamp of approval from the Kansas Department of Health & Environment. No deficiencies were cited during a survey.

“Our St. Rose Surgical Services team is here for anything that requires local or regional anesthesia,” Boyd explained. “We also offer procedures that entail conscious sedation.

“This surgery area is smaller than our previous location but it has a number of benefits,” she continued. “The new configuration allows us easier access to patients and even more personal attention. A patient is never farther than a step or two away from a registered nurse.”

A volunteer is available in the surgery waiting room to provide that extra personal touch, the registered nurse added.

“And it’s a comfortable atmosphere,” she noted. “The décor is homey and relaxing to accommodate patients and their families.”

The rest of the local staff includes two other registered nurses and a certified surgical technician. Ana Refinetti, M.D., a St. Rose general surgeon, is available for some procedures.

“We are all pleased that our new surgery suite is up and running,” Dr. Refinetti said. “Patients and their families can depend on the quality care and treatment they deserve.”

In addition to the local staff, three physicians from Hays Medical Center perform surgeries at St. Rose; HaysMed and Centura Health co-own St. Rose.

The HaysMed physicians are: Dr. Paul Teget and Dr. Jerod Grove, both general surgeons; and Dr. Vivek Sharma and Dr. Gulraiz Cheema, both orthopedic surgeons.

Dr. Teget said he is excited to be part of the new Surgical Services team.

“This new St. Rose facility is beautiful,” he said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to provide expanded surgical services to Great Bend and the surrounding area.

“At times,” Dr. Teget continued, “it is difficult for patients to travel for a variety of reasons; they appreciate us coming to them. This new facility will allow us to provide increased convenience for these patients in a professional, caring atmosphere.”

Judy Fox and her colleagues are ready to serve the community at the brand new St. Rose Health Center gift shop. The Gift Box is open to patients, families and the general public every weekday.

“A lot of our items are pretty unique,” Fox said. “Those who come to The Gift Box should be able to find something that not everyone else has.

“If you need a little gift for a special occasion, we have plenty of options to choose from,” she added. “Or, if you want to treat yourself, that works for us too.”

The Gift Box hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Proceeds will benefit St. Rose.

“Everyone is encouraged to stop by,” Fox commented. “Even if you don’t have an appointment at St. Rose, it is a fun place to shop. Yes, it is smaller than our previous gift shop, but it has more space than you’d think; there is plenty of room to display our new merchandise.”

The unique inventory includes purses, scarves, jewelry, angels, spices, jellies, night-lights, picture frames and knick-knacks.

Fox started volunteering at St. Rose’s gift shop in 2001 and has been there ever since.

“When I retired from teaching, I needed something worthwhile to do and chose St. Rose’s excellent volunteer program,” Fox said. “All of us are very excited to be back and look forward to visiting with old and new friends. We always get back more than we give when we volunteer.

“Anyone with a few hours to spare is encouraged to check into St. Rose volunteer opportunities,” she continued. “Whether you want to be an escort for patients, or help in the surgery waiting room, or work in The Gift Box, there is something for everyone.”

Nikki Adams, director of Volunteer & Associate services, noted that each St. Rose volunteer plays a vital role in supporting patients, families and employees.

“The volunteers are the face of St. Rose,” Adams said. “Our dedicated group at The Gift Box really wanted to open a shop in our new facility. They genuinely enjoy interacting with the St. Rose family and the public, and want to provide this service to the community.”

Two grants made The Gift Box possible. One is from the St. Rose Health Center Endowment Fund at the Golden Belt Community Foundation; the other is from the Hays Medical Center Foundation. Each grant was $9,000.
